David Goodhue - AHN ReporterSan Luis, AZ (AHN) - U.S. border agents detained seven Mexican soldiers on Friday who authorities said accidentally strayed across the border into Arizona.
The soldiers, members of the 23rd Regiment Motorized Cavalry of the Mexican Army, told U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents that they became disoriented while on patrol and accidentally crossed the border in their Humvee.
Border patrol agents took the soldiers' weapons and vehicle, and took them to the San Luis, Ariz. port of entry, where they were processed and returned to Mexico. Their weapons and Humvee were returned to them.
The border patrol said in August that Mexican troops have crossed the border illegally 42 times since Oct. 2007.
Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) told CNN that Mexican troops often cross the border as a diversion to draw attention away from drug smugglers crossing at other entry points.
